Graywater is non-industrial wastewater generated from domestic processes such as dish washing, laundry and bathing. Greywater comprises 50-80% of residential wastewater and is composed of wastewater generated from all of the house's sanitation equipment except for the toilets. Recent technological advances in system design have made graywater recycling an affordable and safe way to conserve natural water supplies. Reclaimed (or recycled) greywater is reused to flush toilets.

Currently permitted (and encouraged) in most European countires, residents of United States jurisdictions that have adopted the International Plumbing Code can also benefit from graywater recycling. Such systems can provide an estimated 30% reduction in water use for the average household. However, the Uniform Plumbing Code, adopted in some United States jurisdictions, currently prohibits greywater use indoors. Check with your local authorities to learn if the use of greywater is permissible in your area.

Graywater recycling, especially in urban areas during times of drought, reduces demand on conventional water supplies and pressure on sewage treatment systems, thereby providing numerous benefits for the environment. Additionally, consumers will realize savings on their water and sewage bills as a direct result of decreasing the amount of fresh water being used.

Brac graywater recycling systems collect water from shower drains, bathtubs and laundry, then filter and pump it through a dedicated supply line to toilet tanks for flushing, reducing average household water consumption by a third. They can be designed into the plumbing of new construction or retrofitted for existing residential plumbing. Commercial systems are also available.
