Rainwater harvesting is the gathering and storing of rainwater. Traditionally, rainwater harvesting has been practiced in arid and semi-arid areas, and has provided supplemental water resources during times of drought. The principle of collecting and using precipitation from a catchments surface is an old technology that is regaining popularity. As water conservation is becoming increasingly necessary, consumers are discovering ways that rainwater harvesting can be used to relieve stress on the environment and save money.

Generally speaking, rooftop rainwater systems are most used as they are most economical. Areas that receive more than 254mm of annual precipitation are generally good candidates. Most systems require only a limited amount of knowledge and skill to set up. Rainwater collection systems consist of a storage tank to store the water, piping to guide the water in, and additional piping or a valve to direct the collected water to its point of use.

Calculating Rainwater Collection

Rain water collection from roofs can be calculated using the following formulas:

1 inch of rain on a 1,000 square feet (93 m2) roof yields 623 gallons of water; or
1 cubic foot equals (12 inch by 12-inch (300 mm) by 12-inch (300 mm) cube) equals 7.48 gallons; or
1 millimeter of rain on a 1 square meter surface yields 1 litre of water.
